NAIROBI. (HAN) – Somali political dynamics shifted on Thursday as a new alliance was unveiled following a high-level meeting in Nairobi, Kenya.
The talks brought together the Presidents of Jubaland and Puntland, Ahmed Mohamed Islam “Madobe” and Said Abdullahi Deni, along with members of the Forum for the Salvation of Somalia (Madasha Samatabixinta Soomaaliya). Participants included former Prime Ministers Hassan Ali Khaire and Abdi Farah Shirdon, as well as prominent opposition MP Abdirahman Abdishakur.
Discussions centered on Somalia’s fragile political and security landscape, with leaders emphasizing the need for a roadmap toward stability, stronger security, and economic progress.
At the end of the summit, the leaders announced the following steps:
- Creation of the Council for Somalia’s Future – a new political body bringing together the Forum for the Salvation of Somalia with Jubaland and Puntland authorities.
- National Conference in Somalia – an agreement to organize a major political gathering inside Somalia to debate the country’s transitional process.
- Completion of the Council – upcoming sessions will finalize the council’s structure and mandate.
- Appeal for Unity – Somali citizens were urged to resist division and work collectively toward peace and development.
- Acknowledgment of Kenya – appreciation was expressed to Nairobi for its continued support of Somalia’s stability and progress.
The Nairobi declaration represents a rare show of unity between regional leaders and opposition figures, forming a political front outside of the federal government’s authority in Mogadishu.
The move is seen as a direct challenge to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the Federal Government of Somalia, underscoring growing rifts between Villa Somalia and federal member states. Analysts say the development could intensify political strains while mounting pressure on the president to demonstrate inclusive leadership capable of bridging divisions.
