MOGADISHU, (HAN) — After failing to reach an agreement with Jubbaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam “Madobe,” Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has reportedly initiated a plan to establish a “New Jubbaland Administration” based in the Gedo region.
According to reliable sources, the President, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre , and several senior government officials have been holding a series of meetings this evening to discuss the technical aspects and implementation of the plan — a move that observers say could trigger a political and possibly military confrontation similar to the past Ras Kamboni conflict.
The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) is pursuing the creation of a new regional administration in Gedo following the recent establishment of a North Eastern administration.
Garbaharey is expected to serve as the capital of the proposed new Jubbaland. However, the plan had been delayed due to previous clashes in Beled-Hawo, as Gedo remains a focal point of the ongoing political rivalry between Villa Somalia and the Jubbaland leadership in Kismayo.
The FGS aims to advance preparations for the upcoming one-person-one-vote elections across Banadir, Hirshabelle, Galmudug, South West State, Waqooyi Bari State, and Gedo. Nevertheless, Puntland, Jubbaland, and the Opposition Council have rejected this plan, citing lack of consensus.
In response, the opposition groups have formed a new Political Council to counter what they describe as “unilateral” election preparations by the federal government. They have also announced plans for nationwide demonstrations and political conferences expected to take place in Garowe, Kismayo, and Mogadishu in the coming days.
