MOGADISHU, (HAN) – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has informed senior members of the Damul Jadiid political faction that the government’s preferred candidate for the leadership of the proposed “New Jubaland” administration is Senator Abdullahi Fartaag, the current Minister of Security.

Senator Fartaag, a seasoned political figure, previously served as Deputy President of the former Interim Jubba Administration and has long been regarded as a close political ally of current Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Madobe).

According to reliable sources, President Hassan made the announcement during a closed-door meeting with Damul Jadiid members, stressing the importance of unity and coordinated strategy within the faction as Somalia’s federal map continues to evolve.

Mr. Fartaag, who hails from one of the dominant clans in Jubaland, maintains strong political and social influence across Kismayo, Saakow, and the Gedo region. His selection is widely viewed as a strategic move aimed at strengthening the federal government’s foothold in southern Somalia, especially ahead of the anticipated restructuring of regional administrations.

Political observers say the endorsement could reshape alliances in Jubaland’s political landscape, given Fartaag’s historical ties to Madobe and his reputation as a pragmatic and experienced administrator.
