KIGALI, (HAN) — Somali National Army Chief Gen. Odowaa Yusuf Raage has paid an official visit to the Rwanda Military Academy in Gako, where he met Somali officers currently pursuing advanced military education. The visit aimed to review ongoing training programs and deepen military cooperation between Somalia and Rwanda.

During his meeting with his Rwandan counterpart, Gen. Raage discussed ways to expand training opportunities for Somali officers as part of Somalia’s broader effort to professionalize its armed forces. Both military chiefs agreed to strengthen collaboration in defense education, leadership development, and technical training.

“Our partnership with Rwanda is a reflection of Somalia’s commitment to building a disciplined, professional, and capable national army,” Gen. Raage said during the visit, according to Somali military officials.

Rwanda has become one of the key partners helping Somalia rebuild its defense sector after decades of conflict and instability. Dozens of Somali officers are currently enrolled in various military courses in Rwanda, including command, leadership, and defense management programs.

In the past, Somalia’s military recruitment and promotions were often influenced by clan affiliations and political connections. However, in recent years, the Somali National Army has adopted a merit-based selection system that prioritizes education, professionalism, and leadership skills.

Military cadets from Somalia now receive rigorous training both at home and abroad. For example, officers undergoing training through the Turkish military program known as Turksom spend three years completing courses equivalent to a bachelor’s degree, followed by additional advanced studies in Turkish universities at the master’s level.

Similarly, Somali naval and marine officers are required to graduate from recognized military academies as part of the ongoing reform to build a modern, professional defense force capable of safeguarding Somalia’s borders and maritime resources.

The visit by Gen. Raage underscores the growing defense cooperation between Somalia and friendly nations in Africa as Mogadishu continues to strengthen its institutions and prepare for the eventual handover of security responsibilities from African Union peacekeeping forces.
