MOGADISHU, (HAN) – As President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud concludes his four-year term, which began on May 15, 2022, his administration leaves behind a legacy that has deeply shaped Somalia’s economy, politics, security, and national sovereignty. Four years under his leadership have seen the nation enter a new chapter marked by historic progress and renewed global standing.

1. Debt Relief and Economic Recovery

One of the most significant achievements of President Hassan Sheikh’s government was completing the international debt relief program (HIPC). This milestone officially removed Somalia from the list of heavily indebted poor countries, granting it access to direct financial engagement with international institutions. Both the IMF and World Bank commended the Somali government for its effective implementation of financial reforms and public resource management.

2. Lifting of the Arms Embargo

After more than three decades, the United Nations Security Council lifted the longstanding arms embargo on Somalia — a major diplomatic victory for President Hassan Sheikh. This move has allowed the government to rebuild a modern national army capable of defending the country’s sovereignty.

3. Joining the East African Community (EAC)

Somalia’s formal accession to the East African Community marked a major step forward in regional integration. The move opens doors for trade expansion, free movement of people, and increased investment opportunities, strengthening Somalia’s economic and political ties with its neighbors.

4. Closure of the Powerful UN Office in Mogadishu

In a bold move symbolizing restored sovereignty, President Hassan Sheikh ordered the closure of the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), which had long played a dominant role in Somalia’s internal affairs. This decision was widely interpreted as a declaration that Somalia had regained control over its national agenda, particularly in security and governance.

5. Somalia’s Seat at the UN Security Council (UNSC)

For the first time in history, Somalia secured a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council — a major diplomatic breakthrough reflecting the country’s growing international credibility and influence on global decision-making.

6. Improved Security in Mogadishu and Strengthening of National Forces

Mogadishu today enjoys greater peace and stability compared to previous years. The Somali Armed Forces have undergone extensive training and modernization, with new combat aircraft, heavy weaponry, and advanced defense systems enhancing their operational capacity. The government has also expanded its elite forces and recently unveiled plans for a technologically advanced naval unit.

7. Oil Exploration and Infrastructure Investment

For the first time in over 35 years, Somalia launched both onshore and offshore oil exploration projects, signing agreements with international companies, notably from Turkey. Major infrastructure developments are also underway, including the construction of one of the largest ports and airports in the Horn of Africa — projects expected to transform Somalia into a key regional trade hub.

8. Establishment of the National Space Center

In an ambitious scientific leap, Somalia began building its first-ever National Space Center. The initiative, developed in partnership with Turkey, aims to advance science, technology, and environmental monitoring — marking Somalia’s entry into the space and innovation era.

9. Counterterrorism Progress and Decline of Al-Shabaab Influence

The Al-Shabaab militant group, which has long terrorized Somalia, now faces significant military, economic, and ideological pressure under President Hassan Sheikh’s administration. The government’s comprehensive counterterrorism strategy has greatly reduced the group’s operational capacity and influence, particularly in Mogadishu and central regions.

Other notable achievements include the establishment of the Northeastern Regional Administration, formation of a National Human Rights Commission, and a notable increase in national revenue and budget growth — all seen as part of the enduring legacy President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud leaves behind as he completes his term in 2026.
