The Chairperson of the African Union, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has once again reaffirmed the African Union’s continued support for the Federal Government of Somalia as it intensifies its fight against the militant group Al-Shabaab.

At a press conference held in Mogadishu alongside Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Youssouf praised the Somali leadership for its strong commitment to restoring peace and stability in the country. He acknowledged President Hassan’s vital role in advancing national reconciliation and counterterrorism efforts.

“The African Union fully stands with Somalia in its fight against terrorism,” Youssouf declared. “We recognize the bravery and resilience of the Somali government and people in facing the threat posed by Al-Shabaab.”

Youssouf also announced upcoming plans to reinforce the AU’s troop presence in Somalia in the coming weeks. While acknowledging existing financial and logistical challenges, he noted that efforts are underway to resolve them. He emphasized that the additional forces would further enhance Somalia’s national security.

The Chairperson of the African Union has urged Somali citizens not to believe fake news and propaganda spread on social media. which he warned are designed to undermine national security. “It is crucial that the Somali people remain united and vigilant to strengthen the country’s peace and stability,” he said.

Commending Somalia’s recent financial reforms, Youssouf highlighted the government’s success in achieving international debt relief—a milestone he described as a clear sign of Somalia’s commitment to transparency and economic rebuilding. He noted that these reforms have helped restore international confidence and demonstrate Somalia’s resolve to defeat extremist groups and ensure lasting peace.

Youssouf’s visit to Mogadishu—his first since assuming the role of AU Chairperson—was hailed as a significant diplomatic step. “My presence here is a clear indication of the African Union’s strong commitment to supporting Somalia,” he stated.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud thanked the African Union for its ongoing support, particularly through the AU Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), which continues to play a crucial role in ensuring the country’s security and stabilization.
