HARGEISA — The Somaliland government has officially approved the entry of travelers through e-visa applications at Hargeisa airport, signaling a significant step toward modernizing the region’s immigration system.
The move allows foreign nationals to apply for visas online before traveling, aiming to simplify entry procedures and boost both business and tourism opportunities in the semi-autonomous region.
The decision comes shortly after the closure of a related project previously overseen by a relative of President Muse Bihi Abdi, commonly referred to as “Ciro.” Sources say the project, which aimed to streamline visa issuance, was shut down due to administrative and operational challenges, leaving the e-visa initiative as the primary channel for international arrivals.
Officials in Hargeisa have described the e-visa approval as a step toward enhancing regional connectivity and international engagement, while also strengthening border security.
Travelers are now encouraged to submit their applications through the official Somaliland e-visa portal, with authorities promising a faster and more transparent processing system compared to traditional visa methods.
Observers note that the e-visa system could also promote economic growth, particularly by facilitating investment and tourism, while maintaining tight government oversight of immigration flows.
