JOWHAR — Over the past month, the regions of Hirshabelle and Galmudug have witnessed a worrying rise in incidents of vehicle hijackings and looting, particularly targeting public transport vehicles that ferry passengers between towns. The growing insecurity has created fear and uncertainty along major travel routes in Middle Shabelle and Galgaduud regions.

According to local sources, two passenger vehicles of the “Layla Calaawi” type were recently seized near Cadale in Middle Shabelle. This incident was seen as retaliation for the **four vehicles—three large buses and one Layla known as Calaawi—that were hijacked earlier in Guriceel, Galgaduud region. In each case, the armed men reportedly forced passengers to disembark before escaping with the vehicles, leaving travelers stranded and shaken.

Security forces in both regions have since launched operations to track down the culprits and recover the stolen vehicles. However, progress remains slow as the armed groups behind these attacks continue to exploit the weak security presence in remote areas.

Community leaders have voiced deep concern over the escalating situation. Sheikh Yuusuf, one of the elders representing the Gaafiidley community, called for immediate government intervention, condemning the acts as “a grave violation of travelers’ safety and a threat to public stability.” He urged regional administrations and federal authorities to take coordinated action to end the growing menace.

The recent incidents have disrupted transportation between Mogadishu and central Somalia, with drivers and passengers increasingly fearful of traveling the main routes. Many transport operators have already suspended or reduced trips due to security concerns.

Security experts warn that if the situation is not urgently addressed, it could further isolate communities, cripple local trade, and deepen the insecurity already plaguing the central regions of Somalia. Meanwhile, security forces are intensifying patrols and setting up checkpoints in an effort to restore peace and ensure the safe movement of people and goods.
