BELEDWEYNE – Business leaders in Hiiraan region have begun preparations for leadership elections within the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture, following the expiry of the previous chairman’s term.

The Chamber convened a key meeting in Beledweyne on Thursday to discuss the electoral process, guidelines, and requirements for candidates vying for senior positions, including Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, and other executive posts.

Organizers said the objective was to ensure that the upcoming vote is conducted in a transparent and inclusive manner, allowing participation from all sectors of the regional business community.

Participants at the meeting expressed unanimous support for holding the election, saying it would help reinvigorate the region’s private sector and strengthen cooperation among traders and entrepreneurs.

“This election is a turning point for Hiiraan’s business sector. We want leaders who can represent our interests and promote economic growth,” said one participant.

Committee members overseeing the process said preparations are underway to organize a fair and accountable election. They emphasized that all eligible members of the Chamber would be allowed to take part.

The Hiiraan Chamber of Commerce plays a central role in promoting trade, supporting small enterprises, and representing the private sector in engagements with local and national authorities. Business figures say effective leadership is crucial to improving the investment climate and job creation across the region.

Beledweyne, the capital of Hiiraan, is a major commercial centre in central Somalia and serves as a key link between agricultural producers and markets in other parts of the country.

Local businesspeople have voiced optimism that the new leadership will bring renewed energy and unity to the Chamber, paving the way for greater private sector participation in regional development.

The election date is expected to be announced in the coming days, according to the organizing committee.
