MOGADISHU – The Federal Government of Somalia has officially launched its long-awaited electronic visa (E-Visa) system, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to modernise border management, enhance national unity, and improve access for international visitors. Government officials say the initiative will make it easier for foreign nationals to enter the country while increasing transparency and efficiency in the immigration process.
The announcement comes as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited the headquarters of Somalia’s Immigration and Citizenship Department in Mogadishu. During the visit, he emphasized the government’s commitment to digitalisation, institutional reform, and improving public service delivery. “This initiative reflects Somalia’s determination to strengthen national cohesion and embrace modern systems that facilitate travel, investment, and international cooperation,” the President said.
The E-Visa system is part of a broader push by the Federal Government to strengthen institutional capacity, promote economic engagement, and increase international confidence in Somalia’s security and governance. By allowing visitors to apply online before arrival, the system reduces bureaucratic delays at ports of entry, improves security monitoring, and ensures a smoother process for tourists, businesspeople, and diplomatic personnel.
Officials also noted that the E-Visa system aligns with Somalia’s vision of leveraging technology to boost governance, streamline public services, and integrate the country more closely into the regional and global economy. The platform is expected to make Somalia a more attractive destination for international investors and travelers, contributing to economic growth and development.
President Mohamud’s visit and endorsement of the E-Visa system underscore the administration’s commitment to using modern technology to unify the country, improve public services, and project Somalia as a secure, accessible, and forward-looking nation.
