Mogadishu — The Banadir Regional Police have arrested 17 people, including both civilians and members of the armed forces, for allegedly disrupting public order and violating security regulations.

The arrests came during a joint operation carried out by the Banadir police in coordination with other security agencies in Mogadishu. The suspects are accused of defying a government ban on celebratory gunfire during Independence Day festivities.

“A full investigation is underway to determine the damage caused by last night’s unlawful gunfire. The suspects will be brought before the appropriate court to face justice in line with the law,” the police said in a statement.

Authorities have launched a manhunt for additional suspects believed to have fired shots from military compounds.

The police urged residents of the capital to assist security forces by reporting anyone who threatens public safety. Information can be shared by calling the Somali Police Force emergency hotline at 991.
