DJIBOUTI — Djibouti’s ruling party, the People’s Rally for Progress (RPP), has officially nominated President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh as its candidate for the country’s upcoming 2026 presidential elections.
The long-serving leader, who has been in office since 1999, received the party’s endorsement at a major rally attended by thousands of supporters in Djibouti City. Standing alongside his wife, First Lady Kadra Mahmoud Haid, President Guelleh addressed the cheering crowd, expressing gratitude for their continued confidence in his leadership.
During his speech, President Guelleh highlighted Djibouti’s progress under his administration, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development, trade expansion, energy production, and diplomacy. He noted that the country has achieved significant milestones, including the launch of its first satellite, making Djibouti the first Somali-speaking nation to send a satellite into orbit.
Djibouti currently chairs the African Union, a role President Guelleh described as a reflection of the country’s growing diplomatic influence in the region.
Economically, his government has been credited with maintaining currency stability and curbing inflation, even as neighboring countries experience sharp fluctuations in exchange rates. Djibouti’s port, one of the largest and busiest in the region, continues to serve as a crucial gateway for landlocked African nations, further cementing the country’s position as a regional trade hub.
President Guelleh also emphasized the government’s investment in modernizing the national armed forces, equipping them with advanced training and technology. This has made Djibouti a preferred host nation for several foreign military bases and regional security partnerships.
As the 2026 election approaches, President Guelleh — one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders — is expected to face both domestic and international scrutiny over his bid for another term. However, his supporters view him as a symbol of continuity and stability in a volatile region.
