DJIBOUTI – Ethiopia’s newly appointed Ambassador to Djibouti, Legesse Tulu, has formally assumed his diplomatic duties after presenting his credentials to President Ismael Omar Guelleh on 17 November 2025.
During the ceremony in Djibouti City, Ambassador Legesse reaffirmed Addis Ababa’s commitment to deepening what he described as a “strategic and long-standing partnership” between the two neighbouring states. He highlighted the central role Djibouti continues to play in Ethiopia’s economic and security landscape, particularly as the gateway for over 90% of Ethiopia’s maritime trade.
The ambassador said his mission would focus on expanding cooperation in a range of areas, including regional integration, peace and security, infrastructure development, and economic connectivity. He also emphasized the shared values and historical bonds that underpin Ethiopia–Djibouti relations.
President Guelleh welcomed the new envoy and expressed his government’s readiness to work closely with Addis Ababa to enhance bilateral ties. Djibouti and Ethiopia have in recent years collaborated on major joint projects, including railway and energy-sharing agreements, and both governments view their relationship as crucial for stability in the Horn of Africa.
Ambassador Legesse, a former government minister and senior official, takes up his post at a time when the region faces multiple political and security challenges. Analysts say his appointment signals Ethiopia’s intention to reinforce its diplomatic presence in Djibouti as part of a broader strategy to strengthen regional cooperation.
