MOGADISHU — Somalia’s Federal Government has issued a strongly worded statement expressing deep concern over the violent unrest that erupted in the Awdal region over the weekend, particularly in the city of Borama town, where confrontations between security forces and protesters resulted in multiple deaths and injuries.
The clashes, sparked by rising tensions linked to local political grievances, created hours of chaos in Borama as demonstrations escalated and security forces responded with force. While the exact number of casualties has not been officially confirmed, community sources report several fatalities and significant injuries, prompting widespread alarm about the risk of further instability.
In its statement, the Federal Government offered condolences to the families of those killed and wished a swift recovery to the injured. It described the violence as a “tragic and avoidable incident,” suggesting that early dialogue and de-escalation efforts could have prevented the situation from deteriorating. “The loss of life and the suffering endured in Borama is deeply regrettable,” the statement said. “This was a situation that could—and should—have been resolved through peaceful means.”
The government urged the Somaliland authorities to take steps to calm the situation, calling on officials to listen to community concerns and avoid actions that may inflame tensions. “We call on the authorities in Somaliland to show compassion and hear the grievances of the people,” it said, emphasising the need for responsible leadership amid heightened public anger.
Addressing traditional elders, religious leaders, business owners, women, youth, and the broader Awdal community, the Federal Government appealed for restraint and encouraged residents to refrain from actions that could further undermine public safety. It stressed that stability could only be restored through dialogue and peaceful engagement, noting that community voices must be heard and legitimate concerns addressed.
The government also reiterated its readiness to help provide medical support to those injured in the unrest, saying it was prepared to coordinate assistance to ensure victims receive the care they need.
Meanwhile, Borama remains tense as residents express uncertainty over what may unfold in the coming days. Local elders have begun informal efforts to mediate between authorities and community members, though no official negotiations have been announced. Observers warn that the next few days will be critical in determining whether the region moves toward de-escalation or faces further unrest.
