MOGADISHU – At least 19 people have died and 16 others have been injured after two four-storey residential buildings collapsed in the Al-Mustaqbal district of Fes, Morocco’s state news agency has reported.
Preliminary information indicates that children were among the victims, with authorities confirming that the two buildings were home to eight families. The scale of the tragedy has raised concerns about building safety standards and the living conditions of low-income communities in the area.
Footage shared widely on social media showed police officers and emergency rescue teams working intensively at the scene, digging through piles of debris in search of survivors believed to be trapped beneath the rubble. Crowds of onlookers could also be seen gathered around the site as rescue operations continued into the night.
The incident comes at a time when Morocco is facing growing public dissatisfaction over deteriorating living conditions. In September, large demonstrations were held across several regions, with protesters voicing frustration over rising poverty levels, poor public services and mounting economic pressures.
Authorities have not yet released the cause of the collapse, but investigations are under way as emergency teams continue their efforts to locate any remaining survivors.
