MOGADISHU – Somalia’s Minister of Defense, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, has sharply responded to former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, accusing him and his allies in the Council of Presidential Candidates (Madasha) of misleading the public and attempting to undermine Mogadishu’s security.
Speaking to local media, Minister Fiqi said the opposition had “lost their political direction” and were making statements that defame the capital.
“The confusion and constant complaints from the Madasha have reached a point where they openly insult and tarnish Mogadishu’s reputation,” Fiqi said. “In an interview I heard, someone even claimed that calling Mogadishu safe is a ‘misfortune.’ This is irresponsible.”
Fiqi accused Sheikh Sharif and his allies of rejecting key national processes while questioning security improvements recognized by both Somali citizens and international partners.
“They rejected elections, they rejected the constitution, and now they challenge the security gains acknowledged by citizens and international partners alike,” he said. “This is what happens when political ambition clouds judgment.”
The minister emphasized that Mogadishu is at a historic moment as residents prepare to elect local district representatives, a step aimed at strengthening governance and accountability.
“Mogadishu is making history this month,” Fiqi said. “The city is choosing leaders it can hold accountable for security and development. Anyone opposing this progress is effectively supporting the conditions extremist groups like Al-Shabaab seek.”
The remarks highlight rising political tensions in Somalia ahead of planned local elections, with each side accusing the other of destabilizing the country’s fragile security environment.
