DHAKA — Tens of thousands of supporters welcomed Tarique Rahman, acting chairman of Bangladesh’s largest opposition party, as he returned to Dhaka Thursday after 17 years living in exile.

Supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) lined streets between the airport and the official reception venue, waving party flags, holding banners and showering the political leader with flowers.

Rahman, the son of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, is seen as a leading contender for the prime ministerial post in the upcoming national elections expected in February. Security forces, including heavily armed police units, were deployed throughout the city to maintain order during the large-scale reception.

He is expected to address supporters later in the day, signaling a high-profile re-entry into Bangladeshi politics after nearly two decades abroad.
