DOHA — Qatar has rejected Israel’s reported recognition of Somaliland as an independent state and called for an emergency Arab summit to address what it described as a dangerous escalation that threatens regional stability.

In a statement issued by the Qatari Foreign Ministry, Doha said Israel’s move violates international law and undermines Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Qatar warned that unilateral actions of this nature could destabilize the Horn of Africa and set a troubling precedent.

Qatar called for an urgent Arab League summit to be held in Cairo to formulate a unified Arab response to Israel’s announcement and to counter what it described as inflammatory statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Gulf state reaffirmed its firm support for the unity and sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia and urged all international actors to respect Somalia’s internationally recognized borders.
