CAIRO — Somalia’s ambassador to Egypt and permanent representative to the Arab League, Ali Abdi Aware, delivered a strongly worded speech on Sunday during an emergency meeting of the Arab League, condemning what Somalia described as an illegal declaration by Israel recognizing Somaliland.

Speaking at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo, Aware said the move constituted a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law.

He also described the announcement by Israel’s government as “null and void” and warned that it could destabilize the Horn of Africa and the wider region.

Aware urged Arab League member states to adopt a unified stance in support of Somalia and to reject any actions that undermine internationally recognized borders. He emphasized that Somaliland remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia, a position supported by the United Nations, the African Union and the Arab League.

The emergency meeting was convened following Somalia’s request for urgent consultations over the announcement, which Mogadishu says breaches established international norms and threatens regional peace.
