ADDIS ABABA — The African Union has formally rejected Israel’s reported recognition of Somaliland, reaffirming its full support for the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

The announcement was made by Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, who said the continental body does not recognize Somaliland as an independent state and considers it an integral part of Somalia.

“The African Union firmly upholds the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” Youssouf said in a statement. “Any unilateral actions that undermine Somalia’s unity are unacceptable and contrary to international law and African Union principles.”

The AU’s position aligns with long-standing African policy opposing unconstitutional changes of borders and rejecting secession without the consent of the recognized central government.

Israel’s reported move to recognize Somaliland has sparked strong reactions across Africa and the Middle East, with critics warning it could destabilize the Horn of Africa and set a dangerous precedent for separatist movements on the continent.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has never been recognized as a sovereign state by the African Union, the United Nations, or any major international body.

The AU called on all international actors to respect Somalia’s internationally recognized borders and to support peaceful dialogue under Somali leadership.
