MOGADISHU — The Commander of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) has lauded Puntland’s security forces for making significant advances against militant groups entrenched in the rugged Golis Mountains of northeastern Somalia.

Speaking in an interview with Somalia’s state media, the AFRICOM commander credited the recent gains to joint efforts, noting that U.S. support — including airstrikes, intelligence sharing, and logistical assistance — had been crucial in weakening extremist elements in the region.

He also praised Somalia’s elite Danab (Lightning) commando unit, describing it as one of Africa’s most capable counterterrorism forces. “The Danab continue to demonstrate professionalism, discipline, and effectiveness on the battlefield, setting a standard for the region,” the commander said.

On broader U.S. policy toward Somalia, the commander declined to speculate on whether the Trump administration might adjust its strategy, stressing that his role is to execute presidential directives and oversee military cooperation rather than weigh in on policy debates.

The commander noted that his visit to Somalia served as both an assessment mission and a reaffirmation of U.S.–Somalia security ties. He emphasized AFRICOM’s commitment to deepening partnerships with Somali security institutions in the fight against terrorism and highlighted the need for sustained cooperation to ensure long-term stability.
