MOGADISHU — The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia and the Somali National Armed Forces (SNA), carried out airstrikes targeting al-Shabaab militants in Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region on December 18, 2025, according to an official statement released by AFRICOM.
The airstrikes were conducted near Nur Dugle, a strategic area located approximately 215 kilometers northeast of Mogadishu, an area that has frequently witnessed clashes between government forces and the militant group due to its proximity to key supply routes and rural strongholds.
In its statement, AFRICOM said the operation was part of ongoing joint efforts to weaken al-Shabaab’s operational capacity and prevent the group from carrying out attacks in Somalia and beyond.
“AFRICOM, alongside the Federal Government of Somalia and the Somali Armed Forces, continues to take action to degrade al-Shabaab’s ability to threaten the U.S. homeland, our forces, and our citizens abroad,” the statement said.
The airstrikes came just hours after al-Shabaab fighters launched a coordinated attack on positions held by Somali government forces and allied local militia groups in the Nur Dugle area. The assault reportedly triggered intense and prolonged clashes, involving both heavy and light weapons, as government troops and local fighters attempted to repel the militants.
Residents in nearby villages told local media outlets that loud explosions and sustained gunfire were heard for several hours, with the sound traveling far beyond the immediate conflict zone. Some civilians reported fleeing their homes amid fears of being caught in the crossfire.
While official casualty figures have not yet been released, preliminary reports indicate that the fighting resulted in multiple deaths and injuries on both sides. Local sources also suggested that al-Shabaab may have suffered significant losses due to the combined ground operations and aerial bombardment, though these claims have not been independently verified.
Somali security officials said operations in the area were continuing, with efforts focused on clearing remaining militant hideouts and securing key locations to prevent further attacks. Authorities also emphasized that measures were being taken to minimize civilian harm.
The Middle Shabelle region remains a critical frontline in Somalia’s ongoing campaign against al-Shabaab, as the militant group continues to mount attacks against government forces, local militias, and civilians despite sustained pressure from Somali troops and international partners.
