SAINT PAUL — Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison has sharply criticized former President Donald Trump’s recent comments targeting Somalis in Minnesota, warning that divisive rhetoric will not fracture the state’s sense of community.
Ellison said Trump is attempting to pit Minnesotans against one another, but stressed that the state’s values remain rooted in inclusion. “Minnesotans don’t turn on our neighbors,” he said, noting that residents from diverse backgrounds “are proud to call our state home.”
Highlighting the state’s Somali population, Ellison said many fled war and famine to rebuild their lives in Minnesota, where they now serve as “an integral part of our state, our culture, and our community.”
He dismissed Trump’s suggestion that Temporary Protected Status (TPS) could be revoked specifically for Somalis in Minnesota, calling the idea both discriminatory and legally indefensible. “President Donald Trump cannot terminate TPS for just one state or on a bigoted whim,” Ellison said. He added that his office is monitoring the situation and “exploring all of our options.”
Ellison concluded by expressing confidence that Minnesotans will reject fear-driven politics. “Minnesotans know better than to fall for President Donald Trump’s scare tactics and scapegoating,” he said.
