Afmadow – Jubbaland security forces have presented Hussein Abuukar Mohamed, also known as Hussein Burgaan, a former member of the militant group Al-Shabaab, who voluntarily surrendered to authorities in the town of Afmadow.

Burgaan revealed to the Jubbaland media that he had been a member of the group for a considerable period but decided to abandon the organization due to worsening living conditions, hunger, and relentless internal pressure.
“I could no longer endure the situation I was living in… there is no help, no care—just constant fear and pressure,” Burgaan stated in his first public comments since his defection.
Jubbaland’s security officials confirmed his surrender was voluntary and noted that he will undergo a formal investigation process as part of standard procedure.
A spokesperson for the security sector described Burgaan’s defection as evidence of growing internal dissent within Al-Shabaab’s ranks and a sign of shifting dynamics in areas the group once controlled. The spokesperson emphasized that Jubbaland stands ready to support all individuals who choose to leave the group and reintegrate into civilian life.
“Jubbaland security forces will continue the fight against Al-Shabaab, while encouraging all those who wish to return to a normal life to come forward,” the spokesperson said.
The case underscores a broader trend in Somalia, where mounting pressure from government operations and deteriorating conditions within Al-Shabaab have led to a rise in defections.
