Nairobi, Kenya – Amnesty International has raised serious concerns following the recent enforced disappearance of Kenyan human rights defender Mwabili Mwagodi in Tanzania, calling for urgent justice, transparency, and accountability at both national and regional levels.

The organization welcomed the news that Mwagodi has been found alive after his troubling and unexplained disappearance. While his safe return brings relief, Amnesty emphasized that the circumstances of his abduction, cross-border transfer, and abandonment raise serious human rights concerns.

“We salute the resilience and courage shown by Mwagodi’s family, the unwavering pressure from civil society, and the tireless advocacy of organizations such as VOCAL Africa and Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI),” said Irungu Houghton, Executive Director of Amnesty International Kenya.

Governments’ Silence Under Fire

Amnesty strongly condemned the silence and apparent inaction of both the Tanzanian and Kenyan governments during Mwagodi’s disappearance. Neither state, according to the organization, offered public information or clarification regarding his whereabouts or legal status during the ordeal.

“The failure of authorities to provide timely information or justify the detention of a human rights defender is unacceptable and sets a dangerous precedent in the region,” Amnesty said.

Call for Independent Investigations and Regional Oversight

Amnesty International is urging the East African Court of Justice to take up the case and ensure independent and impartial investigations are launched. The organization is also calling for full accountability for those involved in violating Mwagodi’s rights, and for measures to be put in place to protect other activists across the region.

Solidarity with Human Rights Defenders

Amnesty reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of human rights across East Africa, stating that no activist should ever face intimidation, enforced disappearance, or harm for standing up for justice.

“We recommit our solidarity with all human rights defenders who risk their lives daily to ensure justice, freedom, and dignity for all,” said Houghton.
