CAIRO — The Arab League on Thursday strongly condemned Israel’s statement claiming it has recognized Somaliland as an independent state, describing the move as provocative and a serious threat to peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.

In a statement issued on Dec. 26, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said Israel’s declaration represents a clear violation of international law and an infringement on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity that underpin the United Nations Charter and the international system.

Aboul Gheit said the move constitutes direct interference in the internal affairs of the Federal Republic of Somalia, stressing that Somaliland remains an integral part of Somali territory under internationally recognized borders. He warned that unilateral recognition of breakaway regions undermines international norms and risks fueling conflict both regionally and globally.

The Arab League accused Israel of pursuing expansionist policies, saying the decision reflects a broader pattern of actions that have contributed to instability in the Middle East and beyond. Aboul Gheit linked the move to Israel’s continued policies toward Palestinians and neighboring countries, arguing that such actions demonstrate disregard for international legitimacy.

“The future of Somalia and its regions must be determined in accordance with the will of the Somali people as a whole and through lawful and inclusive processes,” the statement said.

The Arab League reaffirmed its full support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling on the international community to reject any unilateral measures that violate international law. It urged all parties to respect Somalia’s internationally recognized borders and to avoid steps that could escalate tensions or trigger new instability in the Horn of Africa.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the central government, but it has not been recognized by the United Nations or the Arab League. Israel’s reported recognition has drawn sharp criticism from Mogadishu and several regional and international actors, adding to growing diplomatic tensions surrounding Somalia’s territorial integrity.

The Arab League concluded by reiterating its commitment to Somalia’s stability and warning that actions undermining established international principles pose long-term risks to regional and global peace.
