ADDIS ABABA — The African Union’s Peace and Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday at the level of foreign ministers to discuss Israel’s recent move to recognize Somaliland, according to diplomatic sources.

The extraordinary session was formally requested by Egypt, which has expressed strong concern over the potential implications of the move for the unity, sovereignty, and stability of the Federal Republic of Somalia, as well as for peace and security across the Horn of Africa.

In a note circulated to member states, Egypt warned that the recognition could undermine established African Union principles, particularly the bloc’s long-standing commitment to respecting existing borders inherited at independence. Cairo stressed that any deviation from this principle could set a dangerous precedent and fuel political and security instability in the region.

Diplomats said the meeting will focus on assessing the legal, political, and security consequences of Israel’s decision, and on coordinating a common African position in line with AU frameworks and international law.

The African Union has consistently upheld Somalia’s territorial integrity and has not recognized Somaliland as an independent state since it declared separation in 1991.

Israeli and Somaliland authorities have not yet commented publicly on the planned AU meeting.
