Mogadishu — The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has congratulated Somalia on its 65th Independence and Unity Day, commending the nation’s progress toward peace, stability, and development.

In a statement issued today, AUSSOM Acting Head Sivuyile Thandikhaya Bam praised the resilience and determination of the Somali people as they continue their pursuit of lasting peace.

“Today’s independence commemoration provides an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the tremendous milestones achieved by Somalia in its quest for lasting peace and stability. The progress made so far is a testament to the resilience and determination of the Somali people,” Bam said.

Bam also paid tribute to the Somali Security Forces, acknowledging their sacrifices and tireless efforts in the fight against violent extremism.

“On this special day, I pay tribute to the brave and gallant Somali Security Forces, whose tireless efforts against violent extremism are yielding positive results. Their selfless actions on the frontlines have restored hope and strengthened belief in Somalia’s journey to prosperity,” he added.

Somalia marks Independence and Unity Day on July 1 each year, commemorating the unification of the former British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland territories in 1960 to form a sovereign republic. The anniversary is being celebrated across the country with official events and calls for unity and national renewal.
