Mogadishu – The Commander of the Burundian contingent serving under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), Colonel Oscar Hatungimana, has called on Burundian troops to remain vigilant against continued threats from the militant group Al-Shabaab.

During a recent operational tour across all military bases under Sector 5, Colonel Hatungimana conducted a field assessment aimed at evaluating the security situation, boosting troop morale, and reaffirming Burundi’s unwavering support for its peacekeeping forces in Somalia.

Meeting with both officers and enlisted personnel, the commander lauded the troops for their discipline, resilience, and commitment to stabilizing Somalia under difficult and often dangerous conditions.

“The threat posed by Al-Shabaab remains real and persistent,” Colonel Hatungimana said. “Constant alertness and professionalism are key to fulfilling our mission and ensuring the safety of both our forces and the civilians we protect.”

He also urged the troops to continue upholding the highest standards of discipline and to strictly adhere to international humanitarian law and human rights principles, reinforcing Burundi’s role as a responsible and lawful contributor to regional peacekeeping.

“The Burundian forces must lead by example, demonstrating lawful conduct even during active operations. This is not just a moral imperative—it is a duty expected by the international community,” he emphasized.

Colonel Hatungimana further commended the soldiers for their dedication and service to the Somali people, stating that Burundi remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting stability in Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa.

Burundi has long played a key role in African Union peacekeeping operations in Somalia, initially under AMISOM and later under ATMIS, now known as AUSSOM. The Burundian National Defence Force (BNDF) has primarily operated in southern and central Somalia, conducting counterinsurgency operations and supporting the Somali government in its ongoing battle against Al-Shabaab insurgents.
