Mogadishu — In a move welcomed by security experts and local communities, the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) has approved the extension of Burundi’s peacekeeping mission in Somalia for an additional six months. This decision ensures that the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) can continue its vital operations without interruption.

Originally scheduled to depart by June 30, 2025, Burundian forces will now remain through December 2025. Their continued presence helps sustain progress in the fight against al‑Shabaab and supports efforts to stabilize liberated areas.
A Timely and Strategic Decision
The extension comes at a critical time, as the African Union works to bridge a funding gap and finalize the deployment of Egyptian forces. The Council’s swift action prevents potential security gaps and reinforces the AU’s commitment to Somalia’s peace and security.
Support for Somalia’s Future
The AUPSC also highlighted its strong commitment to Somalia’s long-term stability, announcing plans for an emergency summit to mobilize US$166.5 million in funding for AUSSOM. The phased transition of AU forces remains on track, with a full exit targeted for December 2029—aligned with Somalia’s growing capacity to secure its own future.
This extension reflects a united regional effort to ensure lasting peace and security in Somalia.
