Dares Salaam — At least 38 people were killed when a bus with a minibus in Tanzania, sparking a blaze that engulfed both vehicles, the presidency announced on Sunday.

The tragic accident occurred on Saturday evening in Sabasaba, Kilimanjaro region. According to officials, the crash was triggered when one of the bus’s tires burst, causing the driver to lose control.
“A total of 38 people died in the crash, including two women,” the presidency said in a statement, noting that 28 others were injured.
“Due to the severity of the burns, 36 of the bodies remain unidentified,” the statement added.
Six of the injured remain hospitalized as they receive treatment.
Deadly road accidents are common in Tanzania.
In 2018 World Health Organization report estimated that between 13,000 and 19,000 people died in traffic accidents in the country in 2016 — a figure far higher than the government’s official toll of 3,256.
