Moqokori, Somalia–(Horn Africa News) — Calm has gradually returned to the town of Moqokori in central Somalia’s Hiiraan region following a deadly suicide bombing and fierce clashes between Al-Shabaab militants and government forces early Monday morning.

The attack began when a suicide bomber targeted security forces and civilians, triggering hours of heavy fighting between the militants and Somali National Army (SNA) troops, supported by local Ma’awisley militia. The militants also attempted assaults on neighboring Gumarre village, an area recently reclaimed from Al-Shabaab.

Residents described scenes of chaos as the initial blast was followed by direct combat. Al-Shabaab fighters reportedly infiltrated parts of the village briefly, intensifying fear among the civilian population before being repelled.

On its affiliated media channels, Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, stating its fighters had penetrated deep into Moqokori and surrounding areas. However, Somali military officials have not confirmed these claims. Authorities acknowledged that clashes took place but say operations to secure the area have since succeeded in restoring order.

Medical teams and humanitarian agencies have been working under challenging conditions to assist the wounded. The exact number of casualties remains unclear, as assessments continue.

Moqokori holds strategic significance as a base for ongoing operations against Al-Shabaab in Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle. In recent months, Somali forces have made gains in the region, capturing territory and weakening the group’s presence.

Analysts say Monday’s attack reflects Al-Shabaab’s attempts to retaliate and relieve mounting military pressure. The group has previously carried out similar suicide bombings in Beledweyne and other towns targeted in government offensives.

The incident underscores the continuing security challenges in central Somalia, as the government and allied forces seek to stabilize newly liberated areas and prevent further insurgent attacks
