MOGADISHU (HAN) – A cargo ship that departed from Jamnagar, Gujarat in India and was en route to Bosaso, the capital of Somalia’s Bari region, caught fire off the coast of Gujarat.

The vessel was reported to be carrying approximately 950 tons of rice and 100 tons of sugar, owned by Somali traders from Puntland.

The ship’s management confirmed that the Fire Department dispatched three fire engines to the scene, while ambulances and local police forces also arrived to assist with rescue and safety operations.

The ship is operated by HRM Company, based in Jamnagar. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Incidents like these involving cargo ships heading to Bosaso are frequent, highlighting the risks faced by commercial vessels transporting goods to Somalia.

Experts note that the main cause is often a lack of caution during the rough sea season, particularly from May to September, when maritime conditions are most dangerous.
