BEIJING — China strongly criticized the United States over its detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, saying Washington has no right to act as a “global judge” or interfere in the internal affairs of another country.
A spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the move constituted a clear violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty and international law, stressing that no country has the authority to unilaterally determine the political fate of another nation.
“China firmly opposes any country acting above international law or imposing its will on others under the guise of justice,” the spokesperson said, adding that Beijing cannot accept behavior that undermines the principles of state sovereignty.
The spokesperson emphasized that Venezuela’s internal affairs should be decided solely by the Venezuelan people and their institutions, and called for strict adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter, particularly respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference.
China’s statement comes amid growing international criticism of the U.S. action against Maduro, which several countries have described as a dangerous escalation that could further inflame global tensions and destabilize the region.
Beijing warned that unilateral and coercive measures, including military or forced actions, risk creating broader instability and undermining international peace and security.
China urged all parties involved to pursue dialogue and political solutions, saying disputes should be resolved through diplomacy rather than confrontation.
“Only peaceful dialogue can lead to a lasting solution,” the spokesperson said.
The U.S. has not publicly responded to China’s remarks.
