BEIJING — China has issued a strong warning to the United States against any form of military intervention in Nigeria, saying such actions would threaten regional stability and undermine African sovereignty.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Beijing considers Nigeria a key strategic partner in Africa and opposes any attempts to interfere in its internal affairs under the pretext of protecting human rights.

“China firmly supports Nigeria’s efforts to safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity. We oppose any external interference or military involvement in the name of human rights,” Mao told reporters in Beijing.

The statement follows reports that the U.S. is considering “limited military options” in response to rising insecurity and alleged human rights violations in northern Nigeria.

China’s warning underscores its growing influence in Africa, where it has invested heavily in infrastructure, energy, and technology projects through its Belt and Road Initiative. Nigeria, one of Africa’s largest economies, is a central partner in that initiative.

Mao Ning further urged Washington to “respect the independent choices of African nations” and to focus on promoting dialogue rather than confrontation.

“Africa does not need a new Cold War,” she said. “It needs peace, development, and genuine partnerships based on equality and mutual respect.”

The U.S. has not yet issued a formal response to China’s remarks.
