GALGADUUD – Intense clan clashes have broken out in Garasle, a settlement in central Somalia’s Galgaduud region, local officials confirmed on Saturday.

The violence involves militias from the towns of Balanbale and Guriel, triggered by long-standing disputes over land ownership and past killings.

Residents in northern Galgaduud report that the clashes have already caused casualties, though the exact number of deaths and injuries has yet to be verified.

The fighting is taking place in territory beyond the effective control of the Galmudug regional administration, near the border with Ethiopia’s Somali region.

Community elders and local sources note that the same clans have clashed repeatedly in recent years, with efforts to secure a lasting peace agreement proving unsuccessful. The absence of a durable settlement has allowed cycles of violence to resurface whenever tensions rise.

Clan fighting remains one of the most persistent threats to stability in Galgaduud, frequently resulting in loss of life, destruction of property, and displacement of civilians.

As of press time, neither the federal government nor the Galmudug authorities have issued a statement on the ongoing clashes, despite mounting calls for urgent intervention to prevent further escalation.
