MOGADISHU, (HAN) – Tensions in Beledweyne escalated this week after a clash between government forces left one soldier dead and at least five civilians wounded. The violence highlights ongoing security and administrative challenges in the region.
The incident reportedly began when two National Guard soldiers attempted to rob a female khat vendor at the busy Darawiish Market. Nearby government troops intervened, leading to an armed confrontation.
“It started as an argument, then gunfire erupted. One soldier was killed instantly, another injured, and several civilians were caught in the crossfire,” a witness said. Injured civilians, including two women, were taken to local hospitals; the extent of their injuries is not yet clear.
Amid these security challenges, the commander of the 27th Division of the Somali National Army, Ali Cagey, successfully intervened to allow civilians access to Ugaas Khaliif Airport, previously blocked by forces affiliated with the disputed Hirshabeelle administration over airport taxes. Commander Cagey assured the public that he would not tolerate harassment or obstruction of citizens relying on the military for protection.
The ongoing mismanagement in Hiiraan region has been attributed to the contested leadership of the Hirshabeelle administration, which frequently appoints officials lacking local community support. Reports indicate that Muse Salad disrupted airport operations for personal interests, causing tensions in Beledweyne where residents were injured during clashes.
Commander Cagey’s timely intervention prevented further escalation and ensured civilians could access the airport safely, underscoring the challenges posed by regional political disputes and administrative mismanagement.
Security tensions have been mounting in Beledweyne town in recent weeks, with residents frustrated by recurring nighttime thefts and limited police response. Local authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the latest incident.
