MOGADISHU — Tensions have risen in Baidoa in recent days amid a political standoff involving South West State President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed, known as Laftagareen, with residents and local sources reporting security disruptions and growing unrest in the city.

Laftagareen, whose extended stay in office has drawn criticism from some political actors, has faced mounting pressure over the management of the regional administration and the political process.

Critics argue that leadership transitions are a normal part of governance and say prolonged disputes over authority risk undermining stability in the region.

Baidoa, once regarded as relatively calm and orderly, has seen increased security deployments and sporadic disturbances as civilians attempt to go about their daily activities. Some residents say they fear intimidation and restrictions on movement as tensions persist.

Observers warn that the situation could affect social cohesion and the city’s reputation if dialogue and de-escalation measures are not prioritized. Responsibility for restoring calm, they say, lies with the regional leadership and all stakeholders involved in the dispute.
