HARGEISA– Former Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi has accused Egypt of playing a central role in supporting Somalia politically while working against Somaliland’s push for international recognition.

In remarks reflecting regional tensions, Bihi said both Egypt and Qatar remain firmly opposed to Somaliland’s recognition, describing them as the main obstacles standing in the way of Hargeisa’s diplomatic ambitions.
He claimed that Cairo actively helped Somalia gain the upper hand over Ethiopia on political fronts by leveraging major international platforms, including the African Union, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. According to Bihi, Egypt also pushed efforts to sideline Ethiopia from hosting the AU headquarters, a move he characterized as part of Cairo’s wider strategy to curb Ethiopia’s regional influence.
The comments highlight the deepening political alignment between Egypt and Somalia, which Somaliland views as a major setback in its quest for recognition.
They also underscore how power rivalries in the Horn of Africa continue to shape alliances and fuel diplomatic friction.
Political Analysis
Egypt’s support for Somalia is widely seen as an extension of its dispute with Ethiopia over the Nile waters and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). By forging stronger ties with Somalia, Cairo seeks to counter Ethiopian influence in the Horn of Africa.
For Somalia, Egypt represents a powerful ally capable of shielding it from Ethiopia’s attempts to expand its political leverage. However, for Somaliland, Cairo’s consistent backing of Somali unity further dims hopes of winning international recognition.
As the geopolitical contest intensifies, Somaliland faces mounting diplomatic pressure, while Somalia continues to secure stronger external support. The Horn of Africa is increasingly becoming a battleground for regional and global strategic interests.
