CAIRO – The Cairo Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding (CCCPA) has announced the successful completion of a comprehensive training program for Egyptian armed forces units preparing to join the new African Union mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

The training, conducted in Cairo, was jointly organized by CCCPA and Egypt’s Ministry of Defense, with financial and technical backing from Japan, which played a central role in supporting the program.

AUSSOM, which replaces the outgoing African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), is mandated to strengthen Somalia’s security institutions, support the Somali National Army, and oversee a smooth handover of security responsibilities.

According to CCCPA officials, the program focused on peacekeeping skills, international cooperation, and strategies for adapting to Somalia’s complex security environment. The trained Egyptian units are expected to be deployed in the near future as part of the AU mission.

Egypt’s participation marks a significant step in reinforcing Somalia’s security, underscoring Cairo’s commitment to contributing troops and expertise to regional stability efforts. Historically, Egypt has maintained close ties with Somalia, extending support in politics, education, and peacebuilding.

A regional security analyst noted that Egypt’s involvement in AUSSOM highlights growing Arab and African solidarity in backing Somalia’s security transition, which could have a wider positive impact on stability across the Horn of Africa.

The United Nations and international partners continue to coordinate with the AU to build Somalia’s security capacity, with AUSSOM seen as a new phase of global cooperation aimed at helping the country achieve lasting peace and stability.
