Egypt is set to establish a significant military base in Wargadhi, located in Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region. The base will serve as the primary hub for Egyptian forces in Somalia, taking over positions currently held by Burundian troops operating under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) in Hirshabelle state.

Burundian forces are expected to withdraw or transfer security responsibilities soon, paving the way for Egyptian troops to assume full operational control in the area.
The planned base will host around 1,100 soldiers, whose mandate includes ensuring general security, safeguarding key installations, training Somali forces, and coordinating rapid-response operations. The Egyptian contingent will also participate in counterterrorism efforts and assist in strengthening Somalia’s military capabilities, supporting the country’s goal of building a robust internal security framework.
In addition to combat forces, the base will include Egyptian military experts and instructors who are not affiliated with AUSSOM. These specialists will assist Somali forces in officer training, operational planning, and overall military skill development.
This initiative forms part of a broader regional security cooperation plan, with Egypt among the countries seeking to enhance military training and support in Somalia. Officials expect that the new base and associated training programs will bolster Somalia’s security partnerships, reduce the threat of terrorism, and improve the capacity of local forces—ultimately creating a more stable environment conducive to political and economic development.
