Several neighboring countries remain deeply involved in Sudan’s ongoing civil war. The commander of Sudan’s northern forces, Mohamed Ajakumi, has revealed that Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki has pledged to support Sudan by providing military training.
Speaking to the Sudanese newspaper A’Sudani on June 27, Ajakumi stated that President Afwerki promised to assist by training up to 50,000 fighters to help defend Sudan against the threat posed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Both Sudanese forces and the RSF are reported to rely heavily on foreign military assistance. Sudan’s army is believed to receive support from Egypt, Russia, Iran, Turkey, and Eritrea, while the RSF is largely backed by the United Arab Emirates, Chad, South Sudan, and Kenya.
Sudan’s military is said to receive direct military aid, weapons, and training from Egypt. In October 2024, RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo strongly condemned Egypt and Iran for their support to the Sudanese army. Sudanese forces have also reportedly received military supplies from Russia, including fighter jets. Since 2024, Sudanese officials have made several visits to Moscow to discuss strengthening ties and military cooperation between the two nations.
