Ethiopia has formally accused Eritrea of ongoing border violations and human rights abuses, submitting a complaint to the United Nations over the reported continued presence of Eritrean forces in areas along the shared border.

Ambassador Tsegab Kebebew, Ethiopia’s permanent representative to the UN, told the international body that credible reports continue to emerge detailing serious abuses in the border regions. He warned that the actions of the Eritrean government not only damage diplomatic relations but also pose a direct threat to Ethiopia’s security.

The ambassador made his remarks ahead of a vote by the UN Human Rights Council on whether to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Eritrea.

In response, Eritrea rejected the allegations, insisting its military operates strictly within its internationally recognized borders and denying any violations or misconduct.

The exchange reflects persistent tensions between the neighboring countries, despite a peace agreement signed in 2018 aimed at normalizing relations after years of conflict.
