BRUSSELS – The European Union (EU) and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi have jointly reaffirmed their strong support for the Federal Government of Somalia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen state institutions and advance reforms within the country’s security sector.

In a joint communiqué issued following a high-level meeting between EU officials and President El-Sisi, both sides emphasized their shared commitment to promoting peace, stability, and effective governance in Somalia.

“We support the ongoing efforts by the leaders of the Federal Government of Somalia to advance state-building and reform the security sector,” the statement read. “We express deep concern about the threat posed by the Al-Shabaab terrorist group and reaffirm our firm commitment to supporting Somalia’s security transition.”

The communiqué acknowledged the European Union’s sustained contribution to African Union peace operations in Somalia and welcomed the official launch of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), which succeeds the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

Both the EU and Egypt praised Egypt’s planned participation in AUSSOM and underscored the importance of expanding international and donor support to ensure the mission’s effectiveness and sustain Somalia’s stabilization process.

“We commend Egypt’s engagement in the new mission and highlight the importance of broadening international assistance, including contributions from new donors,” the statement concluded.

The renewed support from the EU and Egypt comes at a crucial moment as Somalia continues its transition toward assuming full responsibility for national security and consolidating the progress achieved in governance and counterterrorism.
