ASMARA (HAN) — Abdi Farah Shirdon “Saacid,” former Prime Minister of Somalia and a frontrunner in the country’s upcoming presidential election, has met with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki in Asmara.

Talks centered on cooperation in regional security, economic development, and international engagement. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Somalia–Eritrea relations, with Afwerki expressing unwavering support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and political stability.
Analysts view Shirdon’s visit as part of his broader campaign strategy to secure regional alliances and backing ahead of Somalia’s leadership transition. Widely seen as one of the most prominent contenders in the presidential race, Shirdon’s regional diplomacy could bolster his standing on the national stage.
President Afwerki emphasized Eritrea’s solidarity with Somalia and welcomed prospects for closer cooperation between the two countries, noting the importance of regional stability in the Horn of Africa.
Shirdon, who served as Somalia’s Prime Minister from October 2012 to December 2013, led a delegation to the Eritrean capital for a courtesy visit. He was received by President Afwerki, with discussions focusing on enhancing bilateral ties.
