MOGADISHU–CAIRO–DOHA – Former Somali presidents Abdiqasim Salad Hassan, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, and Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo on Wednesday issued a joint statement denouncing the seizure and misappropriation of public land in Mogadishu, describing it as a clear violation of the country’s Provisional Constitution.

The former leaders extended condolences to the families of those killed during recent operations linked to public land disputes, praying for mercy upon the deceased and a swift recovery for the injured.
Citing provisions of the Provisional Constitution and national laws that regulate land and public property, the ex-presidents accused current authorities of openly breaching constitutional obligations.
They urged President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to:
1. Halt the misuse of public assets and stop exerting power over vulnerable citizens.
2. Provide resettlement and shelter for displaced families entitled to housing.
3. Restore public land to government custody, and, if necessary, ensure that any transactions follow proper legal procedures.
The statement also warned Somali businesspeople and the wider public not to be lured into purchasing or claiming public property, stressing the collective responsibility to protect the nation’s assets.
The former presidents concluded by affirming that the Somali people have a constitutional right to resist the exploitation of public resources, calling for the protection of both the rule of law and citizens’ rights.
