Beled-Hawo — Heavy fighting has once again broken out in the strategic border town of Beled-Hawo, located in the Gedo region of southern Somalia, near the Kenyan border.
According to reports from local sources, intense clashes erupted between forces loyal to the Jubbaland regional administration and troops from the Federal Government of Somalia. The confrontation is said to be centered around the UK military camp, a base currently occupied by Somali federal troops.
Eyewitnesses on the ground described today’s fighting as particularly severe, with both sides reportedly using a range of heavy and light weaponry in the ongoing confrontation. Explosions and gunfire were heard across the town, sending residents into a state of panic.
Preliminary reports indicate that there have been casualties on both sides, including fatalities and injuries, although the exact numbers have yet to be confirmed officially due to the ongoing nature of the conflict.
This is not the first time tensions have flared in Beled-Hawo. The town has witnessed repeated clashes in recent years as disputes over control between the Jubbaland administration and the Somali federal government continue to undermine efforts to bring lasting peace to the region.
