Hiiraan — Federal and community forces tasked with reclaiming the district of Mahas in Somalia’s Hiiraan region remain on high alert, as the Ma’awisley militia — a locally organized, pro-government force — intensifies preparations to expand its control around the strategic town.

According to local sources and security officials, units of the Somali National Army (SNA) assigned to lead operations in Mahas are currently in a state of readiness, awaiting final orders to launch a new offensive against the militant group Al-Shabaab, which continues to pose a threat in the area.

Tensions in Mahas are running high, with residents reporting that Al-Shabaab militants are actively carrying out intimidation and attacks against civilians, raising fears of further escalation.

Security experts warn that any delays in a coordinated push by government forces and local militias could create a dangerous security, potentially allowing Al-Shabaab to regroup or re-infiltrate recently liberated areas under the cover of night.

Military officials in the region have sought to reassure the public, emphasizing strong cooperation between the national army and Macawisley fighters. They affirmed that operations to stabilize and secure liberated territories will intensify in the coming days.

Residents of Mahas and nearby villages have expressed mixed feelings of hope and concern. While they welcome the joint security efforts, they are urging the government to expedite the deployment of reinforcements and deliver humanitarian aid to support communities affected by the conflict.

Since 2022, the grassroots Ma’awisley movement has played a critical role in the fight against Al-Shabaab. Comprised of self-organized locals determined to defend their communities, the group has emerged as a key partner in the national counterterrorism strategy. Their alliance with the Somali National Army has significantly shifted the balance of power in several conflict zones across the country.
