Mogadishu — Amid growing diplomatic tensions, former Somali Minister of Petroleum, Abdirisak Omar Mohamed, has sharply criticized the federal government for its mishandling of foreign diplomats assigned to Somalia — calling the situation a national scandal and a serious blow to the country’s dignity.
In a statement widely circulated on social media, the former minister did not hold back:
“This is a big scandal and a disgrace. When a government fails at the most basic task of verifying the identity and intentions of foreign diplomats sent to the country, it ends up engaging with individuals who may have hidden and harmful agendas. This is pure foolishness.”
Abdirisak’s remarks come at a time when Somalia is embroiled in a diplomatic storm involving foreign envoys accused of pushing agendas that undermine Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
While he did not mention any names, his pointed comments echo growing public frustration over the federal government’s diplomatic strategy — especially regarding its failure to shield Somalia from external interference and preserve national pride.
His statement has sparked widespread reactions online. Many Somalis have backed his criticism, demanding accountability and transparency from the government. Others have urged the authorities to respond decisively to the allegations and clarify their position.
The controversy has intensified following reports that Ethiopia’s newly appointed ambassador to Somalia has previously voiced support for Somaliland’s independence. This development comes amid heightened tensions between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa over a disputed port access agreement signed between Ethiopia and Somaliland — a deal that the Somali government has condemned as a breach of national sovereignty.
As public pressure mounts, observers are now watching closely to see how the Somali government will respond to these growing concerns and diplomatic challenges.
