Mogadishu –Former Commander of the Somali National Army’s land forces, General Mohamed Tahliil Bihi, has issued a strong statement lauding the Hawadle clan’s local fighters, known as Macawiisleey, for their sustained resistance against Al-Shabaab militants in central Somalia. His remarks follow Al-Shabaab’s recent capture of Moqokori, a strategic town in the Hiiraan region.

In an exclusive address, General Bihi emphasized the town’s strategic importance, calling it a pivotal hub for multiple key routes in central Somalia.

Moqokori is a highly strategic location,” Bihi said. “It connects roads leading to Maxaas, Yasooman, Aadan Yabaal, Xaawo Gadiid, Budbud, and further south to Xalfooley, Ceelhareeri and Jalalaqsi. It’s a historic district and a logistical crossroads.”

According to the former commander, Al-Shabaab’s seizure of Moqokori is a major blow to the ongoing local campaign to liberate areas from the group’s grip, especially efforts led by the Hawadle clan and their Ma’awisleey militia fighters.

Al-Shabaab’s capture of Moqokori is not just a territorial gain; it’s a psychological war targeting the resolve of the Ma’awisley, who are the only community that has shown the world that it is possible to resist and fight Al-Shabaab effectively,” he stated.

General Biixi went on to praise the Hawadle fighters for their bravery and endurance in battling an internationally-backed militant group, often with limited support.

These fighters have stood up against Al-Shabaab for years, armed only with determination, local coordination, and community spirit. They deserve medals. The Macawiisleey of the Hawadle clan are the Dervishes (Daraawiish) of this century,” he said, invoking the legendary Somali resistance fighters who fought colonial powers in the early 20th century.

In his closing remarks, General Biixi urged the Hawadle community and their local defense forces not to be demoralized by the temporary loss of Moqokori, but instead to double down on their efforts to reclaim their territory and continue the fight to rid the country of extremism.

This is a setback, but not a defeat. Do not lose hope. Continue your resistance, and Somalia will one day be free of Al-Shabaab.”

The Ma’awisley movement, which began as a grassroots defense initiative among central Somali clans, has gained national recognition for its effectiveness in combatting Al-Shabaab in areas where formal government troops have struggled to maintain control.
